Law of Attraction and the Obstacles We Face

There are two responses I hear when people are facing the challenge of starting a business. The first is “I can’t afford it.” (Either in relation to time or money). The other response I hear is “I can’t afford it, what can I do? How am I going to make this happen?”
Often, it is not whether there will be challenges we will face (because there will always be challenges) but instead what will be our response to the obstacles that stand between us and our goals.
This leads into the Law of Attraction - where do we put our attention and focus? Do we focus on the obstacle or on potential solutions? (Remember LOA tells us that whatever we give our energy, attention and focus on, the Universe gives us more of.)
Facing a challenge or obstacle? - here’s two questions to ask that focus on the solution instead of the problem.
1) So what do I want?
and
2) What am I going to do about it?

Seth Speaks
One of my favorite books is Seth Speaks by Jane Roberts. The book is written by a channeled personality call Seth. Now whether it is written by Seth or by a part of Jane Roberts unconsciousness isn’t as important to me as the validity of the subject matter. Here are several quotes from the book. Please note that this book was published in 1972 - long before The Secret and many other books.

Jim Rohn is a popular American motivational speaker and best selling author of self help and motivational books, CD’s and other resources. I had the privilege to listen to Jim Rohn live; he is an exceptional speaker and very, very humorous. I actually won a draw for 6 or 7 sets of tapes, including two of his tape sets (this was more than a few years ago before CD’s were popular). When I came up to the front I had no idea I was shaking hands with a legend.
Two of the sets I won were The Art of Exceptional Living and Take Charge of Your Life and I highly recommend both.

Where are you going? Do you have a plan? Do you have goals? Are they written down? When was the last time you looked at your goals?
S.M.A.R.T. Goals
Everyone has heard of SMART goals. SMART stands for:
Specific
Goals must be clear and unambiguous. A goal should have a specific outcome or event. For example, I want to lose weight is not as good as I will lose five pounds by….
Measurable
When goals are specific you can measure your progress - if your goals are not measurable, you never know whether you are making progress toward its completion.
Achievable
Can the objective be achieved with a reasonable amount of effort and application?
Let me give you an example. Lets say you are playing basketball with your 6 year old brother. Not exactly a competitive game. Now, imagine playing a game with Michael Jordan. Again, not exactly a competitive game. Now imagine a game with your best friend, Bob. You are evenly matched, every time you play its a close game. Thats the way you need to set your goals.
Relevant
Your goal must be in harmony with your core values and your life purpose. Judith Wright talks about this in her book The One Decision.

It is the One Decision you can make that will completely change your life…. It is a decision so powerful that it becomes a touchstone you orient to when making every other decision.”
When your are clear on your vision, on your ONE decision, and your goals are in alignment with that, they become easier to attain.
Timebound
Putting an end point on your goal gives you a clear target to work towards. Your goal must have deadlines and sub deadlines - for example - you have a goal to purchase a house by a certain date, but you will also have deadlines for saving a down payment, researching the market, finding an agent,etc.

It is not only important to have SMART written goals but you also need a plan on how to achieve them. This is where reverse engineering comes into play. This is where you divide the goal-setting process into smaller achievable steps. First you define your desired outcome. Then you apply a time frame for making it happen. Next you work backwards by systematically identifying all the things that need to happen, and all the things you need to do, along a time line. Eventually you get to what I need to do today to achieve my goal(s). Then its a case of working the plan, and if your goals have clarity (they are measurable and specific) you can measure your progress and revise your goals as you go along.
SMART goals are left brained. In general, the left side of the brain processes information in a linear, sequential, logical manner. It processes from part to whole. The left side of the brain deals with things the way they are-with reality.
The right side of the brain uses intuition, emotion and non-verbal processing. It processes from the whole to the smaller parts. The right side allows us to see creative, alternative solutions. The right side is “big picture” oriented.
In order to maximize achieving your goals, you should use both sides of your brain. SAFE goals are right brain oriented. More about SAFE goals in a future post.

Down the Rabbit Hole
I have been reading The Intention Experiment and rereading What the Bleep Do we Know. In this trailer for What the Bleep the question is asked “How far Down the Rabbit Hole Do You Want to Go?” It seems that the more I read about quantum physics, intentions, thoughts, consciousness… the further down the rabbit hole I go and the more I realize how little I know about consciousness. I believe we are on the edge of a paradigm shift as we learn more about consciousness, thoughts and their effect on our reality.

What is Personal Development?

This is a good quote to start with. For me personal development means that the future is in my power. I believe that my destiny, my life, is guided by my personal decisions and efforts. ( I have a high internal locus of control).
So what is personal development? Personal development is personal. Just like there are many ways to exercise (for example, bicycling, swimming, weight-lifting, jogging, etc.), there are also many ways to personal development (meditation, hypnosis, books, courses, tapes, CD’s, subliminal tapes, Sedona method, tapping (EFT), Lucid Dreaming, etc.) Personal development has more flavors than Baskin-Robbins - what’s your favorite?
